Interplay, Poland 2021

The beauty of light is unparalleled in its ability to transform and enchant. Whether shining through resplendent droplets of rain, or dancing across the dappled surface of a lake, light can create something truly magical and special. And there is perhaps no better embodiment of this beauty than with light and shadows. Together, they form a perfect union, with shadows providing all manner of beauty to the interplay between sunlight and darkness. From silhouettes against the sky to intricate patterns on the ground, every touch of shadow adds beauty and interest to the play between light and dark, like in this moment.

Point of View, Croatia 2021

This building and place caught my attention every day I passed them at sunset, around 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. Every day the colors of the blue sky and the yellow building looked slightly different, which makes me think that even the most ordinary things are surprising and not obvious. The point of view is important in this picture, because at first I wanted to take a picture from the window visible in the photo – unfortunately I didn’t have access to it – from which you could probably perfectly observe the sea and the geometric lines of the roofs of other buildings. But that’s always just a point of view. The beautiful placement of the sunlight, the contrast of colors and the geometry of the building convey the beauty of a moment of pause and contemplation – here and now – even if I was in that window for a moment.

The right Perspective, Spain 2019

Geometric lines are everywhere, from the simple lines of a child’s drawing to the complex patterns of a cityscape, and their balance is pleasing to the eye and calming to the mind. It’s the harmony of form and function. And when we take the time to notice them, we can see the beauty in the everyday world around us. The magic lies in an eye to catch moments like this, the nowness. In a world that is often chaotic, it’s a reassuring reminder that there is order and beauty in the universe. This moment is for me a perfect example of that.

About the Artist

„While working on my photos, I focus on the broadly understood ‘here and now’. In an infinitely small space, which is the boundary between ‘was’ and ‘will be’. I try to make my photos as simple as this space because ‘now’ is like that, but how long and how often do we stay in it? Or when does ‘now’ start and end?”

This is how artist Adam Sobkiewicz (born 1984 in Poland) describes the interesting conceptual approach of his work. In line with this concept, he creates photographs that are both vintage and contemporary. He achieves this by using 35mm film with a rangefinder camera (bessa r2m), which provides him with an experience that he believes cannot be replicated with digital equipment.
